The Bed & Breakfast Manager, Jean & Monty

Welcome to The Garden Retreat

Like so many of us who approach the second half of our lives, I became restless in the corporate world a few years ago. I have always loved restoring old houses and creating beautiful gardens. The question became "How can I live the life I want to live...doing the things I love to do...and, make a living?" The answer emerged, enthusiastically, "Open a Bed and Breakfast!" So...in 2003, I attended an Aspiring Innkeepers weekend seminar; in 2004, I searched for B&B properties in the south and southeast; and in 2005 I bought this little 19-acre farm to finally realize my dream. Here I am...back in my home county near the high school from which I graduated...with a country inn. Who would have imagined...!

The Bed & BreakfastThe renovations on the 100-year-old farm house started in November 2005 and were completed, for the most part, in July 2006. My goal was to make it into a comfortable yet elegant home for me and home-away-from-home for my guests. Also in these years I have I have been putting my signature on the already-established gardens. Most of the gardens have been modified with fewer plants and more comfortable walking paths. As with any large property, it is all a work in progress.

In 2007, I met Monte Howell and fell in love instantly. We got married here on May 2, 2009, a perfect day! Monte uses the cottage as headquarters for Howell Custom Homes. He's a General Contractor and builds custom homes, but also does room additions, remodeling, and larger commercial projects. Also in 2009, we added Katy, the cutest dog in the world, to our little family. We adopted Katy from a rescue group in Martinsville. She is a Schnauzer / Yorkie mix, and has the longest, prettiest eyelashes you have ever seen!

Now the picture is complete! Our desire for you, our guest, is that you will have a time away that is peaceful and quiet and nurturing to your spirit. Somehow, the country just does that for you!

Peace to you.
